Fruits & Tree Nursery
Tree and fruit trees are precursors to environment conservation and sustainable farm production. In response to the demand of agroforestry and fruit tree seedlings in the farming communities in Kenya, ICARLS identified gaps and provides technical assistance to individual farmer groups fruit trees and tree nurseries. ICARLS has established demonstration tree nurseries in strategic areas and there is a plan to scale up nursery farming at all the farmers’ agribusiness centers to support sustainable farm production. This is consistent with the fact that most soils are exhausted and is consistent with modern agriculture. There are up to 250,000 organic fruit tree seedlings that include oranges, mangoes, passion fruits and pomegranate among others) and 70,000 tree seedlings in 4 nurseries in the Soy location. Villagers request these tree seedlings for soil conservation and improve soil fertility. Tree herbs are critical in propelling organic farming since they are alternative to pesticides. Thus, they are the force behind the high market value crops production and local people already possess vital skills for maintaining the trees and marketing their fruit.
